A smoke detector is tax-deductible in a business context
You can put the costs of a smoke detector through as expenses when you install the device in your office or commercial space. With an installation at home, it’s a bit trickier.
Tax rules for fire prevention
For some workplaces, fire prevention, including the installation of smoke detectors, is legally required. According to the code on well-being at work, you must take fire measures if you work with staff or have a space open to the public, such as a shop.
Besides a smoke detector, you’ll probably also need signage and an evacuation plan. Since all these costs are legally required for your business, it’s only logical that everything is 100% tax-deductible. You can also fully reclaim the VAT.
Is a smoke detector at home tax-deductible?
As with all expenses, a tax deduction is not possible when it’s a private purchase. A smoke detector you install in the bedroom or kitchen is not a business expense.
For a smoke detector in the living room, you can partially deduct the costs if you don’t have a separate office space at home. If you install the smoke detector in your home office, you can indeed deduct the costs.
